Friends are the family you chose.

Nearly six years ago I had just had my first baby. She was a sweet little newborn, baby girl who was long and tiny and sweet and perfect in our eyes. She was the ideal baby (to us) and I made everyone anti-bacterial their hands before they touched her. Because I was that new Mom.

We were new parents of about 4 or 6 weeks, I can't remember, when Craig's clients volunteered to watch our newborn perfect baby so that we could go out to dinner... just the two of us.

We took them up on their offer.

Craig knew them... I don't know that I had really known them too well at that point. Maybe we had gone out to dinner once or twice? Maybe? But no matter; we didn't know them well. HOWEVER, I immediately liked them. You know how you just get a feeling about some people? You know when you're dealing with weirdos and you know when you're dealing with good people.

They were good people.

So we prepared our little bundle and as we were in the elevator going up to their condo, I remember asking Craig, "Are you sure these people are trustworthy? I mean, this is our baby."

They were the first people to ever babysit her.

Fast forward to six years later.

I love, love, love them.

Especially, our Sweetie.

Sweetie is the mom of three and is a natural Mom to probably countless others. After my Mom died, we started getting together more frequently when she was in town in Los Cabos. We'd try to have lunch at least once a week. She's had the girls over without us, she's had all of us over for dinner. She's become a part of our lives. We love her.

I think sometimes God brings people into our lives... just as we need them. I could never have imagined six years ago when I met her that she'd matter to me as much as she does today. I know my Mom would have loved her; and I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I enjoy their similarities.

They're both funny.
They're both STRONG.
They're both amazing cooks.
They're both clever.
They're both real.
They're both kind.
They're both human.

So, today on your birthday, Sweetie - I thought it was high-time that I wrote to you.

I am certain that my Mom is thrilled that I have you in my life. Thanks for crying with me, eating with me, making me laugh, making me chicken soup when I'm sick, taking care of my girls and welcoming all of us in your family.

You're so loved.
We are all so glad you were born.

Happy Birthday

P.S. Alice - thank you for sharing her with me. You know I love you, too. And watching your relationship; the two of you. It makes me so, so happy.
