I fear for the kids.

I read these facebook status updates and text messages from the "kids" and I'm so very nervous that punctuation is slowly going the way of the cassette tape and manners.

Dear Kids,

Please remember that punctuation offers a formality that is sometimes quite necessary. A text of, "Sorry 4 yr loss," just doesn't cut it, you know?

While you can definitely communicate with someone in all lowercase with no punctuation, it's altogether sad and confusing. Not to mention, it makes you look half-witted and dense.

In fact, folks may start to wonder, "Did she really graduate from high school without learning the proper usage of a comma?" Or, "Really, did he fill out that job application using "u" for "you" or "r" for "are"?

Also, please remember that contractions require an apostrophe. "Didnt," isn't spelled like that. Neither is, "cant." You kill me.

And then, when did it become ok for you to start shortening words? Are you really in that big of a hurry?

If you're at work and you're updating your facebook status, do you have to type: "@wrk"? That makes me crazy.

The "@" sign is annoying enough, but was it really too difficult to type one more letter? The "o" in work? Come on.

Other ones that kill me:

"abt2" = "about to"
"ppl" = "people"

Ridiculous. This is precisely what makes this generation look lazy. (Gasp. I said it.) I know it's only facebook or it's only a text message - but the thing is, if you make it a habit not to use punctuation correctly, you lose it. You forget it. Then you end up living in a van down by the river.

Hey C. - chp.

  1. (And I completely agree with you. I just couldn't resist!)

  2. I couldn't agree more!!!

  3. This is SO true! I teach college students. They actually send me emails that resemble ignorant text messages. Even though I teach Finance, we have a grammar lesson each week. It is very sad.

  4. Remember cursive writing? That's what I was good at when I was a youngster. I used to practice my cursive writing until it was perfect. I wrote letters to friends and family and waited DAYS or WEEKS for their reply. I wasn't sending texts, I was spelling out WHOLE words. Are kids even taught cursive in school anymore?!

    teehee, I sound like a curmudgeon!

  5. You should see my students' writing. It's quite frightful. -S

  6. OH, how I agree with you. I drives me bananas. Or, I guess, "bnns" if we're just removing all the "unnecessary" vowels.

    A few years ago, I read that some schools (or maybe one or two states? I can't remember) were considering allowing students to use abbreviations/text-speak like this in their college papers. The reason: They were so used to writing that way in their everyday life, it "wasn't fair" to expect them to change their writing style.

    We are a country of enablers as it is! PLEASE, let's not stoop to that level. Ugh.

  7. You should see the requests I get from brides! Terrible! The ones the come in that are actually in sentence form are rare! I get so excited if there are bulleted questions or numbered paragraphs...(how sad).

  8. I cannot believe the grammatical & spelling errors I see in work-related emails, not to mention FB statuses. UNBELIEVABLE. And, people who don't know the difference between there/they're/their, two/too/to... COME ON.

    I mean, the English language is going to evolve (we don't say thee and thine anymore), but when one generation can't understand the next, that's way too fast.

    I type my texts correctly, use punctuation and capitalization. I refuse to evolve.

  9. We're one step away from just grunting at each other.

  10. OMG, I h8 that ppl dont rite ful wds anymr. IDK y ppl cnt rite wds. NE1 who txt lik that is stpd, so plz stop! BTW, btwn u & me I wld nvr b lik that. CU L8r

    (I can not tell you what I just wrote. I need to go to Alta vista babelfish to translate, do they have from lazy person to Proper English on there?! Seriously, I really hate this...type out the words...words are good!)

  11. Personally, I LOVE that you said they're going to end up in a VAN down by the river! God love Chris Farley.
