Book Review: Educated, A Memoir by Tara Westover

Book: Educated, A Memoir
Author: Tara Westover

I was drawn to this book for a few reasons. Primarily, I'm nosy inquisitive and love a memoir; I revel in the opportunity for a sneak peek into how others think. My fascination for memoirs began when I was about 9 or 10 and found Lana Turner: the Lady, the Legend, the Truth on my Grandma's bookshelf. Totally inappropriate, but I was enthralled. I followed this up with any autobiography or memoir that I could get my hands on. I will forever remember reading I Love you, Ronnie: The Letters of Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan when I was about 12. Ya'll, the sweet letters... a lost art. Words have such power.

I could go on and on...

Tara Westover, the author of Educated, A Memoir, is nothing if not resilient. This is the story of a little girl who grew up outside of the establishment. She lived remotely with her survivalist family deep in the mountains of Idaho. No medical intervention. No government involvement. Absolutely no formal education - and very little home school education. They were preppers.

While I want to write about what she endured, the dogma of her parents' religion, her family's patriarchal dynamics, all I can really muster is this: this is a story of strength and courage. Of resilience. Of the painful realities woven into the fabric of every family. This is not a coming of age story, it maps out Tara becoming Tara. She shares with us how she got from there, to here. And oh my, she went so far.
