National Sushi-Bacon-Steak-Vodka Day! (In our house.)

8/23/2017 05:09:00 AM

I've been thinking about what I was going to write to you for at least two weeks now. I had all of these ideas, but a couple of days ago... as I was deeply engrossed in a textbook-Kylee-freak-out, I realized that I would not be me without you.

I am who I am, ONLY because of you.

And today, on your birthday, I am going to feebly attempt to communicate to you the only way I know how, just how important you are to me.

::

It was clear yet again, when you asked me, "...Do you want to play scrabble?"

We had been home in Mexico for four days after spending a very temperate summer in the States. We arrived to unbelievable humidity and smoldering heat. You can actually feel the temperature. I wasn't a happy camper. I may have complained... a lot.

Day 1 - After a day of flying, we returned to heat that fogged up my glasses and no internet, because, Cabo.

Day 2 - Electricity goes out mid-day until evening. Because, Cabo. And because of a little bit of moderate rain.

Day 3 - It's hot, but the internet AND electricity are on. So there's that. I'm still complaining.

Day 4 - Back to work. 9 pm, electricity goes out again, Because Cabo.

It's 87 degrees and humid outside.
It's 87 degrees and slightly less humid inside.

My core body temperature is 117 degrees. Yours, my dear husband? I'll never know.

BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T COMPLAIN.

Nope.

YOU HAD JUST FINISHED A WORKOUT, the electricity (and air conditioning) went out... and I was the one complaining.

I complained. I made it worse for both of us.

You? Fine.

You handled it. You were annoyed, sure. But were you lying on the middle of the living floor, with your phone plugged into your external battery thingy, calling the energy company and simultaneously complaining via text to a good friend your sister?

No.

That's what I was doing.

You. Calm.

After we reported the outage, I was still mad irate.

You? You simply asked me, "...Well, do you want to play scrabble...?"

I immediately responded, "NO." (HOW COULD YOU ASK ME IN A STRESSFUL TIME SUCH AS THIS IF I WANTED TO PLAY MY FAVORITE GAME IN THE WORLD.)

I shut that fun down.

And then a few moments later, the rational side entered and I said, "Yes. I do."

Craig, YOU DON'T LIKE TO PLAY SCRABBLE.

You know I LOVE scrabble. You know that I love letters and words and that I grew up playing scrabble, complete with the Official Scrabble Dictionary (it was grey), with my Mom.

You KNEW that you could pull me out of my rut by simply asking, "Do you want to play scrabble?" and you did it.

YOU are a good human being.

You are empathy personified.

You pull me out of my ruts, like all the time. For twenty years.

And, like always, you did it again.

::

This story explains who you are.

You are calm when I am not.
You don't complain.
You see the situation for what it is. And, adjust.
You make me LAUGH when I need it. Oh, you do this so well.
And, you laugh at my jokes.
Sweet man, I am strong and brave and all that stuff, but I am only so because of my Mama and because of you.

::

The inside of your wedding band is inscribed with the words, "My everything..."

You're the peace and the calm.
You're the reason.
You're the ingenuity.
You're the kindness and the realist.
You're the lover and the giver.
You're the fixer and heart.
You're the cook.
You're the carpooler.
You're the example and the standard.

You.are.our.everything.

Today, we celebrate YOU, sweet man.

Because you were born, Craig Ross, you've made the lives of three ladies in your life so much better than I could have ever imagined.

With all of my heart, I am grateful that you were born.

Happy birthday, Craig Ross.

I love you to the moon and back.
