Two Pretzels: Loose teeth and unconditional love.

September 16, 2015

Loose teeth and unconditional love.

On Monday night I had a conference call at home, so the [awesome] husband/Dad put the girls to bed. The little one was EXHAUSTED from the weekend so she willingly tucked herself in bed and was asleep by 6:30 p.m.

I'd like to think that this is a result of our incredible parenting, but it's not. Sometimes exhaustion is the best sleep motivator.

That said, after my call I crawled into the upper-bunk with my first born to chat with her for a few minutes before she went to sleep.

While Vivienne was sleeping below, we whispered.

With eyebrows raised and excitement written all over her forehead, Lila pointed to and touched one of her front teeth with her pointer finger and then touched the other.

I asked, "Are they loose? DO YOU HAVE TWO LOOSE TEETH? BOTH OF THEM? BOTH OF YOUR FRONT TEETH?"

(She's lost 3 other teeth...)

She smiled excitedly and nodded, "Yes! Yes!"

Then I said, "Oh Lila, my baby's growing up! YAY!"

Then her smile immediately shattered and I could see her eyes welling up...

...the tears started, the sad eyes...

She looked absolutely devastated.

"Oh no! What happened? What's wrong? Are you ok?"

Now she's crying. It's the sad, heart-breaking, whimpering cry...

"Lila, tell me..."

And then she said, "I just always want to be your baby..."

::

Sigh.

And that's when I reminded her that she'll forever be my baby.

Lila, when you're 36-years-old and you don't know if you're raising your babies right, you'll still be my baby.

I will hold you and stroke your hair and put it behind your ear and rub your face for as long as you'll let me.

::

It's moments like this that I get it. It makes sense.

In moments like this my Mom appears in my heart and I *know* that she loved me so much. I know this because I love them so much.

::

I am so blessed and so grateful that these little beings are on loan to me.

    1. I cry again just reading it. It's a lucky thing we get to to, as Moms. (Hug)
