Rescue dogs: Our Millie.

This is Millie.

1. We aren't sure of her breed. (Maybe a mix of a Havanese, Pekingese, Shih tzu.... and every now and then I think she's part Affenpinchser.). She's strangely long. It's odd. Like weener-dog long. Anywho, we think she's a cousin of Chewbaca and potentially part ewok.

2. We think she's about 2.5 or 3 years old.

3. We adopted her in January of 2012 when she was approximately a year and it has taken us approximately 19 months to really bond with her.

Yep, and we're not even bad people.

For. Real.

The truth of the matter is that Millie ate one of the girls wooden toys EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. for about a year. We tried everything. (More playing, specific toys, more chew toys, crating, positive reenforcement, you name it.)

None of it worked.

She's been tough. Even Ferg didn't love her for the first several months.

Adopting dogs is great, but it's not for the faint of heart.
It's also not easy when you don't have HOURS and HOURS to devote to dog training.

Before kids, The Ferginator was our baby. (And before her we had our bulldog, Nattie...)

After kids, we learned with Millie, well, we're tired and slightly burned out and if it comes down to reading with the girls or teaching Millie to shake, well - Goodnight Moon, it is.

More than a few times Craig said, "GIVE HER AWAY."

More than a few times I said, "WE CAN'T. WE ARE LEGALLY BOUND TO HER. WE PROMISED TO KEEP HER AND TAKE CARE OF HER AND LOVE HER BECAUSE SHE WAS GOING TO BE KILLED HAD WE NOT ADOPTED HER."

Besides, I had already added a little sterling silver Millie to my charm bracelet. I couldn't return a dog that I added to my charm bracelet!

So here we are, 22 months later and we love her.

I adore this dog.

She is so sweet.
She never licks my face. (Which I love.)
She comes when I call her.
She loves  to play.
She hasn't eaten a wooden toy in quite some time. She's developed a conscience.
She curls up with me and cuddles with me.
She sleeps under her dog bed. (Which is adorable.)
She's fantastic with the girls.

She's great.
Sure, she still jumps up.
But, nobody's perfect in our house.

I'm so glad she's ours.

  1. I love that despite the craziness of 2 babies and a furbaby, you guys stuck with her. Sometimes it takes more time and I love a good happily ever after.

  2. I feel this way about Monty. We've had him almost 2 years and just now he & Tucker are starting to really be buds. It took me a few months to bond with Monty, but it was never like Tucker. Tucker = first baby. Then we got Monty. Then our real baby came. And our real baby LOVES Monty. So he's here to stay. Not that there was every a question... not really.
