FOUR.YEARS.OLD. Happy Birthday to my sweet Lila!

6/21/2013 03:08:00 AM

Dear Lila,

When I tucked you into bed on your birthday eve, I held you for a little bit longer than I normally do...

I thanked God for you.
I told you again that you are the baby we prayed and waited for.
As I held you in my arms, with your head cuddled against my heart, I said, "Lila we are so proud of you. We're proud of the little girl you've become. I'm proud of your heart; and how kind you are..."

I continued... (but some things are better left between Mommy and daughter.)

And the whole time I spoke to you, you smiled. And you softly and delicately brushed your fingers along my arm. Soothing me.

Because you are a sweet, sweet, sweet soul.

When I was finished holding you and it was time for bed, I made sure to say what I want you to know forever: I love you, just.as.you.are.

Because seriously, you.are.the.coolest.

Your energy is infectious.

And you're funny.

You are the cutest little thing EVER.

And you have grown so much, Lila! This past August you started going to school from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. every.single.day. And you've done great. You're FOUR-years-old today and you conjugate your Spanish verbs better than I do.

You're creative.
You love to paint.
You paint every.single.day.
I'm not kidding.

You're deliberate and thoughtful. You have a plan. I admire this about you.

You started mixing colors this year and changing your techniques. It's been pretty cool to watch. And you're at the point where you don't even really get paint on your hands anymore. How is this possible?

You love to color and create and and draw and decorate.
You made this a couple of days ago.
That's me on the left (big ears and jazz hands), your Dad on the right (also big ears and jazz hands) and Ferg on the bottom right. (Love that tail.)
You omitted Vivienne and Millie...

But you normally don't omit your sister.
You love her.

You two have really clicked in the past year.

Your relationship has really grown and you two play together from morning to night. Literally, I hear your door open in the morning and in you go into her room... to play. And when you two sleep in the same room? It's HOURS of laughing and singing.

And of course, after a long day, there's no one else you'd rather kick back and eat a popsicle with.

Right now you're super into playing Mommy and you talk to her so sweetly, "Mommy loves you, Baby. Come with me."

But then again don't get me wrong, you two get into your fights, as well. But let's be honest, it's usually Vivienne starting the fights.

But you love her with all your heart.
You're the best big sister.
You're teaching Vivi every day.
You're always protecting your little hermanita.

And the bottom line is that when she gets out of line she can rest assured that you'll gently put her in her place... by laying on her on the kitchen floor.  (I can't wait to re-enact this one in a few years.)

You've conquered your fears this year, Lila, AND I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!

You started swimming class twice a week and after some trepidation, you are now JUMPING into the water and swimming to your teacher. (About 12 feet away.)

We are beyond proud. But as we've already learned with you, you do things when you're good and ready. And, you were ready. (You don't even cry when we wash your hair anymore!)

You're also still ballet-ing. You love the music. You love the fluidity of motion. I'll look over at you when classical music is on and you'll be moving your hands back and forth to the rhythm of the music.

It's precious.

My sweet, sweet soul.

Then there's the style, your style - well, it's consistent with what it's always been.

You think more is better.

Obviously.

And you know how to rock it.

Last year was sort of rough. Right after you turned 3 you got your tonsils and adenoids removed and tubes put it in your ears. It.was.heartbreaking. And terrible. And torturous.

But you came back stronger than ever -- with only one ear infection since LAST JULY!

Oh, that smile.

We have this thing, that when we're holding hands and I squeeze your hand in mine, it means I love you.

Then, you squeeze back.

It's kind of the best thing ever.

My sweet, sweet soul.

I wish I could hold your hand forever, Lila. I wish I could protect you and keep you mine, but sweet girl - I know that you are going to keep on growing and keep on blooming.

Because that's what you're doing right now, Lila...

...you're blooming.

Every day you're becoming more brave.
More confident.
More self-assured.
More uniquely you.

It's incredible to watch.

I love you beyond words, sweet Lila.

The head tilt and that grin.

There are days when the love I feel for you is more than I can bear

Because being your Mommy means experiencing snapshots of awesomeness.

You're growing, Lila.

And I love you so much.

This guys loves you, too. More than you will ever know.

He will forever be the Fix It guy in your life. Trust me, he's got your back.

That smile. That light in your eyes.

That quiet, reflection.

Oh, you're growing up.
And it's so awesome.

Look what happens in a year.

I love you, Lila Ross.
I am so very, very happy you were born.

Happy, happy birthday to you.

Love,
Your Mommy

  2. Dear Lila, I got to my office this morning feeling SO happy... and you were the reason. I saw you at schoool today and hug you and kiss you and you LAUGHED WITH ME.

Then I looked at my calendar and I smiled because it said "First day of Summer". And on top of that with my hand writing it said: "Cumpleaños de Lila".

I've said this to your mommy every single year since you were born... You have the BEST BIRTH DAY of the year. Today, of all the days of the year, the sun is going to shine a little longer before hiding behind our mountains in San Jose.

Both, because it is the solstice AND because we'll be celebrating your life.

Keep blooming, sweet girl. Always. Happy birthday.

    All my love,

    Tia Dulce.
