And so I'm 30.

8/15/2009 11:05:00 PM
As it turns out, I'm 30 today. And I'm happy about it. I'm truly ok with it.

In order to mark this transition from my 20's to my 30's, I wanted to write a list of 30.
Thirty random things.
It's a stream of consciousness.
Read if you'd like - or not. This is one of those self-indulgent posts...
No matter what - I appreciate that you read my blog. Thank you.

1. I'm glad that I was/am always different. From my name, to my mullet-haircut in the 5th grade to the 1986 Toyota Carolla I drove in college with the one brown door. It has all built character and helped me to be confident in any skin. (Thanks, Mom.)

2. I've learned that there is humor in nearly every situation. You just have to take the time to find it. And make the joke.

3. My best attribute is my hair. And I thank my Dad for it. (Any man who blew-dried his hair is worthy of respect, if you ask me.)

4. I'm thankful for all of my nicknames throughout the years from people who've been very special to me: Kylee-kins, Ky, Kasha, Kiwi...

5. I think that without faith, I'm nothing. And when you take everything away - it's all I have.

6. When I was a kid, I used to spit mushrooms out at dinner into the large potted plant in the dining room. I then grew up to discard not-so-great selections from outdoor family potlucks into the bushes at my grandma's house. Today I still refuse to waste calories on "ew" food. If you invite me to dinner at your house, check your plants after I leave.

7. I've had exactly one love of my life and I just happened to meet him two months before I turned 18.

8. I feel that siblings are a gift and I'm beyond thankful for mine.

9. I never thought I'd have children, even when I was a kid -- but I am so ridiculously thankful for how my life has turned out. (Yay, La-la-la-Lila.)

10. I still sing, "Have patience, have patience, don't be in such a hurry - when you get impatient, you only start to worry..." whenever I'm annoyed with someone.

11. I'd like to one day be the owner of a baby grand piano.

12. I've learned the difference between the situations that warrant holding my tongue and those that do not.

13. I've learned that often times when people vent - they're not looking for a solution - just a listening ear.

14. Even though it's obscenely unpopular - I wish I could be tan year-round.

15. Even though it's been years since I've lived near my Mom, my birthday will forever mean a homemade angel food cake (balanced on a glass coke bottle while cooling upside down on the kitchen counter) smothered in pink frosting.

16. My favorite number is 8 yet I give no credence to horoscopes or numerology.

17. I've learned that holding grudges only turns your heart to stone and does nothing to the jerk that has wronged you.

18. When I was a kid and I'd have a run-in with someone, my Mom would always say, "Kylee - you never know what's going on at that kid's house..." Meaning: you never know what that person is going through behind closed doors. I find that to be an accurate anecdote for day to day interactions.

19. I think making snowmen is totally over-rated, but snow cones are fantastic.

20. I think that writing is healing. Both the public blogging-type and the private journaling-type.

21. There are very few exceptions to the rule, "Never trust someone who doesn't like dogs."

22. I've learned that hugging someone melts ANY icy-ness. Everyone wants a hug.

23. I think the United States Postal Service is rapidly moving towards being obsolete - and that breaks my heart. I love stamps and letters.

24. I adore the smell of paper and printing. Especially in new books.

25. Sometimes, all I need is a long bath, a good book and a glass of wine. It cures whatever ails me.

26. I feel that one's clothes never have to match.

27. I feel like I held my little newborn baby sister just yesterday. I can't believe how fast life flies by.

28. I've learned that I don't always understand the decisions made by others - but I can't judge them because each person has their own path.

29. Mashed potatoes, doughnuts and coke slushes are gifts from God.

30. I'm very content with who I am and where my life is at this particular moment.

And that's all. Happy Birthday to me.
